Maker-led replacement work
Every project starts with the surviving object and the reason for replacing it. That keeps the work accurate, proportionate and useful.
We begin by recording the original rather than immediately polishing or dismantling it. Profile, thickness, wear, junctions, old repairs and tool marks can explain how the piece was made and what replacement will sit comfortably beside it.
A bright, mechanically perfect copy may be less convincing than a carefully finished replacement that respects the softer definition and proportions of the service.
Hallmarks and maker’s marks are useful evidence and should be photographed clearly. They can help distinguish an original family pattern from a later addition and guide the date and construction we seek to complement.
We do not reproduce historic marks in a way that misrepresents age. Where marking or assay requirements apply, they become part of the specification for the new work.
Our workshop combines old presses, pattern knowledge, hand fitting and modern control where it improves consistency. This is valuable when a historic-looking object must also work as a dependable knife.
