Maker-led replacement work
Every project starts with the surviving object and the reason for replacing it. That keeps the work accurate, proportionate and useful.
Before making anything, it helps to establish the intended number and type of knives. Drawer shapes, labels, old lists and surviving flatware can show whether the canteen originally held table knives, dessert knives, fish eaters, carvers or specialist servers.
This prevents a commission solving only part of the problem. We can organise the enquiry by place setting and identify which surviving piece offers the best manufacturing reference.
When several knives are required, consistency matters. Handle relief, blade alignment, polish and weight should read as one group while remaining compatible with the older pieces. We plan the run as a set and compare finished work against the approved reference.
If the canteen already contains replacements from different periods, we can discuss which example should lead the new work. The aim is a coherent table rather than another near-match.
Our work suits family canteens, collectors, country houses, restaurants, hotels, dealers and institutional collections. Quantity may be one knife or a larger batch for regular service.
