A bespoke making commission

Custom-made solid silver knife replacements

Some services cannot be completed from any catalogue. The proportions are unusual, the pattern was made for a particular client, or no knife survives in the right size. Our custom-made service develops a replacement from the best available evidence and an agreed brief.

Good to knowCustom does not have to mean visually extravagant. In replacement work, the highest standard is often a new knife that quietly belongs.

Maker-led replacement work

How we approach your commission

Every project starts with the surviving object and the reason for replacing it. That keeps the work accurate, proportionate and useful.

From reference to working pattern

We begin with direct measurement, photography and comparison. Handle outline, decoration and junction are translated into a practical making plan, with decisions about what should be tooled, formed, fitted or finished by hand.

Where only related pieces survive, we use their design language while establishing knife-specific proportions. Draft dimensions and important details are agreed before production.

Commissioned for your requirements

The brief may call for one specific replacement, a group of dinner knives or a new suite complementing an old service. Quantity affects the appropriate tooling and production method.

Intended use matters too. A presentation piece, occasional family service and daily professional dining each have different practical priorities.

Direct access to makers

Because work is carried out at our Sheffield factory, details can be resolved with the people responsible for making them. This reduces the distance between the owner’s reference and finished piece.

Beatson has supplied Sheffield, London and international customers for over a century. Bespoke enquiries begin by email, with appointments arranged when we understand the commission.

Common questions

About custom-made replacements

What makes a replacement custom-made?

The specification is developed around your service rather than selecting a standard knife only by name or approximate appearance.

Can you create a knife when none survives?

Sometimes. Matching flatware, photographs and canteen recesses may provide enough evidence for a complementary design.

Will I approve the specification?

Yes. Dimensions, material, pattern approach, quantity and finish are agreed before manufacture.

Start with photographs
